ELECTROSTATIC DEHYDRATION AND PRECIPITATION TESTER
(Click thumbnail for a detailed view)
APPLICATION :
Utilized for determination water content of emulsions such as encountered in crude oil exploration or refining processes , by means of the application of a high electrical potential across the test sample at preselected conditions of temperature and time duration .
DESCRIPTION :
The six hole design is a single cabinet portable unit which allows the application of an electrical AC potential of up to 3000 volts to six test cells. High voltage is applied in parallel to each one of three pairs of test cells by means of a variable transformer connected to three step up transformers . Applied voltage and milliamp readings are displayed for each pair of cells .
The tester is equipped with a safety switch which allows the application of high voltage only when the electrode cover is in place and the timer is in a timing mode .
The aluminum heating block is equipped with an adjustable
over-temperature safety switch to prevent boiling of water in the test cell or a
temperature control malfunction .
Basic testing consists of test samples being placed in special 7 in. (18cm) long , 100 ml centrifuge tubes with special O-ring sealed electrode caps . Tubes are then placed in a temperature controlled aluminum block and allowed to stabilize . Unique cover assembly captures all size electrode caps and automatically makes the electrical connection through spring loaded contact pins . High voltage is then applied from the enclosed HI-VOLT power supply for a predetermined time period . The application of this high potential causes the water molecules to align and attract to one another , therefore forming water droplets which then precipitate out of the emulsion .
FEATURES:
1. Cabinet
The complete unit is contained in a portable aluminum instrument carrying case, 12"H x 16"L x 10"D . Power requirements are 120V- 10 AMP or 220V- 5 AMP . Miniature blower and screened vent opening are provided for suitable forced cooling and elimination of fumes from the cabinet compartment.
2. Aluminum Block
It has six precision contour bored holes ,which eliminate the necessity for a heat transfer liquid .It is fully insulated on five sides to minimize heat losses into the cabinet. Block has a 3/8" lip around the top edges to prevent sample spillage into the cabinet in case of accidental breakage of sample flask . Block is heated by a single 600 watt cartridge heater and temperature is maintained by an electronic indicating type temperature controller over a range of 0° to 100°C. Bimetallic over-temperature safety switch is incorporated in the block .
3. 100 ml Graduated Flask with large openings . Six flasks come standard with a unit . It is recommended that six spares be ordered .
4. Electrode Cap assembly is designed to fit flask . Assembly is a 17 mm circular electrode positioned between the 75 and 100ml level of the flask . The other electrode is a centrally located 3mm Dia. brass rod extending to the 6mm level, Acetyl insulated except for a 4 mm length at the tip . An O-ring seal provides leak proof sealing at flask opening .
5. Automatic High Voltage Contacts are provided to each flask by a special design Plexiglas cover incorporating matching contact pins. Safety switches actuated by lid cover disconnects both primary and secondary circuits of transformers from contact network in cover. Power to all six flasks is applied simultaneously from transformers with a maximum capability of 3,000 volt AC potential.
6. Control Panel will consist of the following mounted componenets:
a. Switch, Circuit Breaker and Pilot Light
b. Volt and Ammeter for secondary
c. Variable voltage control, 0 – 3000 Volts.
d. Temperature Control 0 – 100 º C.
e. Interval Timer, 0 – 30 minutes. Rotation of time knob to the desired timing interval energizes primary of transformer and timing motor. On release, the motor drives timer to zero, and motor and transformer de-energize.
