MODEL  DC-250

ELECTROSTATIC PRECIPITATION & DESALTING CELL

(Click thumbnail for a detailed view)

APPLICATION

For experimental use .  To establish optimum parameters which enhance the formation and cause the precipitation of  water droplets in an emulsion such as a crude oil under dynamic flow conditions of high pressure and temperature by means of the application of a high electrical potential across the fluid.

DESCRIPTION

The Model DC-250 is made up of two components : the Desalting Cell and a Power Supply Unit . Fluid flow control through the Cell must be provided by the user .

The Desalting Cell consists of a flanged stainless steel high pressure housing 16 in. (40 cm) long by 2 in. (5 cm) ID , with a volume capacity of approximately 50 cu. in. (820 ml).  It has double "see through" tempered borosilicate glass windows for observation of the fluid.

At the lower end it contains an adjustable fluid inlet discharge tube which allows introduction of the test fluid at any selected level in the cell below the electrodes.  Discharge is oriented in the horizontal plane through twelve  .082 in. (2 mm) ID orifices.  At the lowest point in the cell , a needle drain valve is located ,to allow removable of precipitated water .  Attached to this valve is a water cooled condenser coil to prevent flashing when taking samples at elevated temperatures.

At the upper end of the test chamber , adjustable flat circular grids electrodes oriented horizontally  extend into the Cell ,  and allow electrode spacing from one to four inches (25 to 100 mm) at potentials up to 3,000 Volts.  Also located at the top flange is a sampling needle valve with condenser coil , an adjustable 50 to 350 psi (.35-2.4 MPa) pressure relief valve followed by a ball shut-off valve.  Thermocouple probes for fluid inlet and outlet temperatures are provided.  All components are stainless steel .

The Cell is mounted on a free standing base approximately 12 x 12 in. (30 x 30 cm) and allows for inlet tube level adjustment and positioning of a graduated beaker for precipitate removal.  Overall height is 37 in. (94 cm) suitable for placement on a low lab bench.

Power Supply unit is portable and merely supplies adjustable electrical potential up to 3,000 volts.  Potential and power level are displayed on a voltmeter and ammeter.  Also incorporated is a digital temperature indicator with plug in jack and selector switch for monitoring fluid-in and out temperatures.
