OVERVIEW OF OPERATION :

The ASTM-D5001 Test Method measures the actual wear scar size generated on a Test Ball specimen. The wear scar is generated  by the friction between the stationary  ball and a rotating cylinder .  A portion of the  rotating cylinder is immersed in the Turbine Fuel  ( 50 ml  ) inside the Test Fuel Tank . The temperature of the Test Fuel Tank Assembly is controlled , as well as the relative humidity of the air that is circulated into and above the test fluid  at a controlled rate . The test is run for 30 minutes at a prescribed load on the Test Ball . At the end of the Test the Load Arm automatically lifts the Test Ball off of the cylinder . The major and minor axis of the resultant wear scar are measured with a calibrated microscope and the two measurements are averaged to arrive at the wear scar rating for that Test Fuel .

In general  the more lubricity a Turbine Fuel has the smaller the resultant wear scar rating.
